I discovered just the other day that there is a whole field of study which encompasses all the things I am currently obsessed about. It's called philology, and is a subset of linguistics. It's about the history of words and language, their structure, and the relationships within and between languages. I don't think there's a lucrative career path available for philologists, so I can't give up my day job just yet.

Like a bowerbird, I will collect here random wordy things that delight me. And they will by their nature be esoteric, ecletic, arcane, and of little value in the real world.

For context, I am currently doing yet another undergrad degree, this one a BA in Spanish, Latin, and Linguistics. I also have qualifications in engineering, food technology, and accounting. I have strong role models for lifelong education; for example, my father and aunt did their first PhDs in their 50s, and Dad is doing is second one now. The nerd runs deep with this one.

Finally, I'd like to give a special shout-out to my dear friend Sion Thomas for the blog name and for permission to use a photo of her glorious quilt.
